Tribute to Venus Carmichael

Breaking News – 10th anniversary celebration!

In or around August this year (we haven’t kept the exact date, we’re just waayy too rock n’ roll to do such a thing) Kelly and I have been celebrating the life and works of Venus Carmichael for 10 years. We were keen to mark the occasion in some way, because what started as a side project has now become a special thing that I know we both cherish as a real bright spot in our lives. Whatever else is going on, when I strap on that guitar and she picks up that tambourine we know that, at some point, maybe not every song on every night, but at some point, musical magic is going to happen!

The Dalriada

So. Ms Brooks has secured a couple of rooms of the Dalriada, Portobello, for the evening of Sunday, the 19th August, and we egregiously request your presence! It’s a great place where I’ve only done spoken word before, but it’s a regular music pub, with great acoustics, a friendly atmosphere, and good food and beverage.

As you can see from the pics, it’s along the seafront at Porty, so easily accessible from the centre of town by various buses. There’ll be us, and a couple of other bands too!

More details soon, of course, but in the meantime, a special shout out to Fife fans: I’m thinking of investigating a bus to take us there, if there are enough of you interested, so if you are, please get in touch via the usual channels as soon as possible and I’ll look into costs. It would be great to see you there!

2018: Gig Frenzy! (Well, sort of…)

Things have been quiet at Venus HQ for a bit. Well, that’s about to change in the early part of this year, as we have not one, not two, not three, but FOUR gigs lined up for your listening pleasure!

First up, we’ve been asked to provide the musical entertainment at an invitation only event on Friday: this is the ‘Glenrothes, 70 years on’ digital storytelling project, finally coming to fruition. It’ll give us our first taste of playing Hall B at the Rothes Halls.

Next, one of our now regular gigs at Banner’s Hotel, in Markinch, on Wednesday, 7th February. Banner’s has been a great venue for us, and we enjoy the three-monthly performances there. Plus, for me, it’s a nice change to be doing a gig so close to home – and to see friends who wouldn’t normally make it over to Edinburgh to one of our shows there.

The next gig is also at Banner’s, on Wednesday, 2nd May, and then…

If you haven’t heard already, Edinburgh International Book Festival is coming to Glenrothes! There’ll be all sorts of events announced soon, but for now, the date for your diary is the Friday, 17th May, when there’ll be whisky tasting, book readings, and us, in Hall B again!

Hope to see you soon.

Come to our show, help choose the songs for the album, and win a prize!

So. The White Horse has been booked for Saturday, 1st October, the set list has been chosen, and rehearsals have begun. Here’s the thing though – between the gig on 1st October, and the recording sessions for our album at the end of that month, we need to narrow down our own favourite 16 songs to 10 – and that’s where you come in!

Here are the 16:

All I can think of is You
She Sees Round Corners
Katerin
All the Words
The Prediction
Running song
Icarus Wings
Heartlands
Death in Venice (Rose Tattoo)
Coming Around Again
See what I did there, linking the ones we’ve recorded into what’s on Soundcloud, so you can have a listen to some of them? Mind you, there will be inbuilt weighting against ‘Old School,’ ‘In the Canyon,’ and ‘Highway Tonight,’ because they’re on the EP. Thing is, they’re still amongst our all time favourites!
Some of the tracks, of course, won’t mean much to you – ‘Coming Around Again’ is a new one, and while you might have heard Isaac Brutal do ‘Rose Tattoo,’ you’ve yet to hear the Tribute to Venus version, which was one of those magic moments that happen in the rehearsal room when you try something out for the first time.
So, vote now, or better still, come to our gig at the White Horse, Canongate, at 8 o’clock on Saturday 1st October, and tell us what you think then. IT’S FREE! There’ll be links to the online poll, paper and pens for you old school types, and a prize draw for everyone who’s voted!
Here’s the poll for now:
