Hi, Venus fans! Very pleased to say after a short sabbatical Kelly and I have met and agreed our li’l ol’ tribute band to the great woman is just too good to let go: so, subject to our commitments in other bands (and boring stuff like day jobs) we are very open to offers for gigs. Spread the word!

As many of you will know, our Christmas gig at Banner’s was cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control (i.e., them not paying their regular staff). However, we remain available for gigs of all kinds, and in the meantime, all the very best! (Don’t forget that you can donate to a good cause by downloading our Xmas single – or, if that’s too, er, Christmassy for now, the B side)!

Last night’s gig at Banner’s was great – and, breaking news, Banner’s thought so too! So much so they’ve asked us back, not in our regular three monthly slot, but next month! Keep 12th December clear in your diaries, and await updates…

Only a few days now until our 10th anniversary gig at the Dalriada, Portobello (Sunday, 19th August). And a special Tribute to Venus gig wouldn’t be the same without a special Tribute to Venus mug… it’s quite simple. Come to the gig, take a raffle ticket, and win your chance to win the mug!
In or around August this year (we haven’t kept the exact date, we’re just waayy too rock n’ roll to do such a thing) Kelly and I have been celebrating the life and works of Venus Carmichael for 10 years. We were keen to mark the occasion in some way, because what started as a side project has now become a special thing that I know we both cherish as a real bright spot in our lives. Whatever else is going on, when I strap on that guitar and she picks up that tambourine we know that, at some point, maybe not every song on every night, but at some point, musical magic is going to happen!
The Dalriada
So. Ms Brooks has secured a couple of rooms of the Dalriada, Portobello, for the evening of Sunday, the 19th August, and we egregiously request your presence! It’s a great place where I’ve only done spoken word before, but it’s a regular music pub, with great acoustics, a friendly atmosphere, and good food and beverage.
As you can see from the pics, it’s along the seafront at Porty, so easily accessible from the centre of town by various buses. There’ll be us, and a couple of other bands too!

More details soon, of course, but in the meantime, a special shout out to Fife fans: I’m thinking of investigating a bus to take us there, if there are enough of you interested, so if you are, please get in touch via the usual channels as soon as possible and I’ll look into costs. It would be great to see you there!

…and she’s back! We were getting somewhat concerned about the lack of activity on Venus’s blog. Then, an alleged sighting from Keith Richards, supposedly.

I’ll tell you that story another time – still working it through. It did make me think though about another time I disappeared off the radar completely, in the late Eighties. Here’s that tale…
Las Vegas
I’d pretty much given up on my agent when I called in that time. To be fair, I suppose, it’s hard to arrange much for a travelling musician who lives in a Dormobile and leaves no forwarding address.
‘I’m glad you got in touch,’ Fran said. I pictured her in that office of hers in L.A., in back of the mall where the rental stays low. ‘Have you ever been to Las Vegas?’
The gig was a three month residency: after that, she said, ‘we’ll see how we go.’ I should have smelled a rat from the start, but hey, money wasn’t exactly flowing into the coffers, and, this being late November, the cold was starting to bite my toes in Minnesota, where I’d fetched up at that point.
So I said, ‘sure, why not?’

Just when we were starting to worry if Venus was still with us… here’s an unconfirmed report of her being spotted by no less a personage than Keith Richards!
When my cell phone rang in my bedroom a week ago Monday at 4:30 AM, I bolted up from the deepest sleep I’d been in since I don’t know when. Shit, I’d forgotten to leave the phone out of earshot! Double shit, the jolt was so dangerous I came this close to reaching the end of my Earthly days. Hallelujah though, my wife Sandy continued to sleep the sleep of babies. Grabbing the phone, I tiptoed out of the bedroom and down the stairs to the living room sofa.
“What the f*ck’s wrong with you, man?” I said to the caller. “Don’t you know what time it is here? It might be late morning in Ireland, but I don’t live in Ireland!”
