Venus in Orbit

More on that gig on 19th September. It’s at 8 pm, in the White Horse, Canongate, and it’ll focus on Venus’s travels (hence Venus in Orbit). Unfortunately Kirsti Wishart can’t make it this time, but our other regular reader, Halsted M Bernard, is going to do an extra shift with the spoken word pieces. She’s fresh from being the star of the Illicit Ink Unbound show at the Book Festival, so we’re very lucky to have her.

There’ll be new songs, newly-discovered fragments of Venus’s life story, and even a prize draw where you can win your very own Venus Carmichael mug – all for the tiny admission fee of £4/£3 concession. So come on down – what else will you be doing on a Saturday night in mid-September, when Bake Off’s not on and the Voice hasn’t started up yet?

Stand by for more news of a mysterious Venus-related find in an Edinburgh record shop…

Next Gig

Breaking news: delighted to announce Tribute to Venus Carmichael’s next gig will be at the White Horse, Canongate, on Saturday 19th September. More details soon, but in the meantime, keep your diaries clear!

As some of you know, TTVC’s last gig was at the White Horse, and we found it a really good fit in terms of accommodation, acoustics, and (not least) alcohol supplies. Hope to see you there!

Guerilla Gigs – the new thing

Hi y’all,

So Tribute to Venus has been quiet of late – too much of life getting in the way of both of us making music the way we’d want! – but tomorrow night, Thursday, you can catch us at Clerk’s Bar, South Clerk Street, at the open mic from 10 onwards. We hope to pop up at a few of these kind of things in the coming months, to try to spread the Gospel of Venus, although we also plan to do some ‘proper’ gigs of our own soon…

In the meantime, if you’re on Edinburgh’s South side and fancy popping in for a chat, we’d love to see you!

Wedding Dress

Hi everyone, just to let you know that the bonus track you get when you order our EP, ‘Wedding Dress,’ is now up for a listen on Soundcloud. It’s demo quality, but we’re pretty pleased with it – and it turned out to be a favourite with some from our gig at the White Horse. Remember, sign up to our Facebook page or give us your email address, and you get the track ‘Highway Tonight’ from the EP absolutely free!

We’re hoping to do some low-level appearances at open mic nights and such over the next few weeks – maybe see you there!

Voyage to Venus – the Radio Play

We’ve been very lucky with our collaborators and friends in the band. Harky Harknessian, aka Craig Harkness, who recorded this radio play for us, is a multi-talented musician, engineer, producer, sound technician, and all round good guy. How and where he got that original footage of Venus herself being interviewed we’ll never know…

Thanks again to Harky, Andrew Wilson, Kirsti Wishart, Gavin Inglis and May Stocks for their help.

In The Works

Following our gig at the White Horse on 24th April, the band’s been laying low, mainly due to Kelly’s upcoming exams. However, you may have seen on Facebook and Twitter Andrew was recently snapped at Backtracks Music Shop in Brougham Street, up at Tollcross, with the Mad Hatter – he’s been snapped with all the famous musicians about town, dontcha know…

In the meantime, we’ve extended our offer of a free bonus track for you if you sign up to the mailing list or order our EP for now – the track’s ‘Wedding Dress,’ which we played live at the White Horse for the first time. It’s one of the new songs we’ve been working on from Tape 9, but there are more – one of them, ‘Tank Song,’ also featured in our set, and just needs some tweaking production-wise before it’s ready for release. Expect some activity on Soundcloud soon.

Tape #9

tape

Venus herself seems to contact us in mysterious ways. She still has her associates in Edinburgh – in particular, a former clothes shop owner known in her blog only as Farrago Man – and, every so often, a cassette tape arrives at Kelly’s house with some songs. Recorded in what sounds like rudimentary conditions on acoustic guitar, they’re not on any of her records, but the voice is unmistakeable.

We like to think these unmarked packages of cassette tapes mean she’s had word back about us, and she approves enough to give her some of her unreleased material.

Wherever you are, Venus, thanks, peace and love!

The latest tape – with ten all new songs – arrived just before Xmas. It’s marked ‘Tape #9,’ as you’ll see from the picture. So far, we’ve had Tapes # 1, 4, 5 and now 9…

We hope to do justice to some of these new songs, both live and in the studio, as soon as we can.
